Most American children grow up learning the same ABC song (which incidentally has the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star). I don't know what is considered the most popular Korean alphabet song (가나다송), but there are a few on you-tube, some which are more simple, some more complex and some with a catchy tune and others that I can't seem to follow.
One of the more complex and fun Korean alphabet songs is this one to the tune of Doe a Deer (from Sound of Music....I love this musical!):
This cute song is featured on an iphone app called Ding Dong Deng - Han-Geul
There are free and paid versions of both the iphone app and the ipad app. The free version allows all the games, matching, writing exercises, etc for only ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ.
Here's the lyrics in hangul to the cute alphabet song where each letter represents a different animal (there are 14 consonants in the Korean alphabet and their are 7 notes in do re mi fa so la ti, so it's a perfect fit!)

Korean Kids Songs: iphone app:
Every once in a while, I will do an App search for "Korean" or "아이" "우아" "동요" "동화" to see what apps have been newly released. I'm pretty sure I have most of the free ones and a few of the paid ones. I'm a klepto like that, but Husband doesn't protest since they're FREE!!! This is what my "Korean page" of my iphone looked like once upon a time. I think it's overflowed onto a second page now.
Interestingly, this blog is the landing page for people searching for the cute Korean Number Song (숫자송) which I translated here. Well, if you want to be able to listen to that song along with the other cute comic songs (엽기송) that are on you-tube and yahoo!kids Korea.....download this free app:
There are no bells and whistles. It's just a music player. But it's got the carrot song, number song, milk song, health song, rice grain song, cucumber song, etc.
You can play the songs while using another application. Did I mention its free? Really can't complain about that.
It's good listening for the shower.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Pororo Theme song (Season 1 &2)
I don't think that Pororo the Little Penguin needs an introduction. But, just in case...Pororo is one of the most popular children's cartoon in Asia. Pororo began as a Korean creation but has expanded and is translated in multiple languages and is shown in over 80 countries. Kids love Pororo!!!
Any Korean grocery store here in the states is going to carry Pororo merchandise for kids and any Korean video store will likely carry pirated versions of the DVD series (with or without subtitles).
Pororos theme song was the first song in a CD block of 100 Korean kids songs that I borrowed. Pororo is crazy popular. I wonder if there was a loveability contest between Pororo and Elmo, who would win?
Lyrics in Korean

Korean Kids Song Sunday: I'm a Little Teapot
"I'm a Little Teapot" is a definite favorite of kids probably due to the easy hand motions. I'm having trouble finding a you-tube video of the song in Korean. But it is easily found in English.
So, instead, I'm including a page of my favorite Korean kids song book by Samsung Publishers. This book/CD combo includes 40 songs, its lyrics, sheet music and illustrations of the handmotions. I have purchased 3 books in this series and a few of their iphone apps too.

Lyrics in English:
I'm a little teapot short and stout
Here is my handle, here is my spout
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout!
Tip me over and pour me out
Romanization/Transliteration:
nah-neun jah-ggoh ddoong-ddoong-han joo-jun-ja
sohn-jahb-ee eet-goh joo-doong-ee eet-jyo
boh-geul boh-geul mool-eul ggeu-reu-myun
jjook gee-ool yuh-ddah-rah joo-seh-yoh
Translation: (is pretty similar to the English lyrics..but I guess the Korean teapots just don't steam and shout)
I'm a fat teapot
I have a handle and a spout
When my water starts to boil
Tip and pour me out.
PS: I entered the Lyrics into Google Translate and this is what I got:

Korean Kids Song Sunday: English Kids Songs with Korean Lyrics
Sorry! I've missed quite a few Korean Kids Song Sundays as life has gotten REALLY REALLY busy lately. Our friends with their cute Korean kids stayed at our house this weekend so I got to practice some of my Korean songs with them. Because of their Konglish-ness, traditionally English songs sung in Korean lyrics tend to be favorites since the tunes are so familiar. Usually, when English songs are Korean-nized, the outcome can be slightly disturbing due to translation errors or forced translations, but I've found a few that are pretty good:
Head, shoulders, knees and toes*
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Eensy Weensy Spider
I'm a Little Teapot
10 Little Indians
It's a Small World
Little Cabin in the Woods
*I'm going to try to update this blog with these English children's songs.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Sprouting Love
I really love this Korean Kids Song and after you watch this video, you will see why:
So fun right? Catchy tune, there's actually only 4 lines of lyrics (3 of them repeating), and it's about love that sprouts from the heart!!
Youtube videos:
Cute kiddo
Girl sings greetings to her grammas (할머니) and grandpas (할아버지). If you don't think that you can follow the dance moves to the 1st you-tube video: these motions are pretty fun and simple...as the sprouts get bigger and bigger.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Daily Bread Song
In thinking about how best to teach Korean to our future kids, I'll probably want to incorporate Korean as much as possible in our daily routines and songs. One daily routine that I hope to instill early on is mealtime prayers, thanking God for the food and all His blessings. And singing the prayer makes this routine all the more fun!
Here's a home video of Korean kiddo following as his parents sing the Daily Bread Song:
(Mom keeps interrupting the song to tell her son to close his eyes.)
Other you-tube finds:
This little boy's rendition of the mealtime prayer song in Kabble (Korean-babble) just slays me.

Translation in English:
For the meal that you provide for us daily [literally: everyday, for us food giving}
We joyfully thank our Gracious God. [gracious God joyful thanks]
A-men
Here's another version that I found: 날마다 우리에게 양식을 주시는 하나님 아버지 참 감사합니다

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Korean Number song
I guess I'm on a roll with cute you-tube videos. This numbers love song is too cute not to post. I think it adequately describes how many waiting adoptive parents feel about their kids in Korea. Except of course, we will love our children for way more than 10 years...and the part about "save my soul" is also probably not the best expectation to have towards your child (which is an entirely different post). But the part about not being able to wait even 3 more seconds? Ha. I feel that way sometimes. Not often. But sometimes.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Jesus Loves Me 예수 사랑하심은
Husband and I are going to Honduras for a medical/dental missions trip for a week. This is my 3rd time and husband's 4th time returning to this Baptist Hospital in Guimaca, Honduras. So, for this week's Korean Kids Song Sunday, I'm going to switch gears and post in Spanish too. And if it comes to mind, would you pray for our team?
It is my hope that our child(ren) will grow up with a love of music and singing, but more so, it is my deepest prayer that our family will LOVE LOVE LOVE Jesus more than anything. That love, of course, comes with the knowledge that God loved us first. This is the message I hope that we communicate in Honduras and the message that we communicate to our child(ren).
I think that one of the most beautiful ways to worship is through different languages, which is a foretaste of when all nations and all tongues and all nations will gather to worship God. It is God's desire that no one should be leave this world without hearing and embracing the good news of His saving grace. I hope the simple lyrics and words "Jesus Loves ME" ring true in your heart as it does in ours.
Enjoy!

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Tadpole and the Frog
This Tadpole and Frog song is another popular one on you-tube. I like it because the 꼬물꼬물 (ggoh-mool, ggoh-mool) part is just so dang cute. I had to look up in my Korean-English dictionary what 꼬물꼬물 and 팔딱팔딱 (pahl-dahk pahl-dahk) means. Ha. But it's like trying to look up "splish-splash", "th-thump" or another onomatopoeia (ooh! I spelled that right on the first try!) Pahl-dahk means to palpitate or leap. But I'm going to make up the meaning for ggoh-mool as the sound or motion a tadpole makes as it swims wrigglingly through the water
Enjoy!
A version found on you-tube with the very cute
Some commenters remember their professors leading them in singing this song to relieve stress in their college classes! Ha!

Korean Kids Song Sunday: 3 Bears
The 3 bears song is everywhere! I didn't hear it until I started googling and you-tubing Korean Children's song, and this one comes up the most. I can see why kids love the song, but it was made even more popular when a guy performed it in a K-drama "Full House" for his girlfriend. (sorry I don't watch Kdrama's so I don't know the actors or the characters)
I have a free app on my iphone by samsung books that shows the music video. Every once in a while, I let my friend's 1 year old son watch it. He likes the part at the end when they applause after 잘한다 (jahl-han-dah) - Good Job! He claps along too. So cute!
Another version with different hand motions:

Korean Kids Song Sunday: 뽀뽀뽀 - Kiss Kiss
This was a difficult week for many adoptive families who are right on the cusp of being able to travel to Korea to bring home their children. The Korean government have stopped processing exit/emigration permits for the entire month of July, with no promise (yet, there are hopes) of continuing in August. This doesn't directly affect us since we have not even been matched with our child so we're not even at the "waiting to travel" phase. Yet, it is what-if-worry-inducing. Again, I remind myself to stay in the here and now and not worry about what tomorrow will bring.
Anyway, I posted this song for the adoptive families who are longing to kiss and hug and finally hold their little ones in Korea. The song joyfully sings about kisses from mom and dad. This song understands that when mamas and papas meet their kiddos, there will be lots and lots of 뽀뽀뽀s (bbo-bbo-bbo).
Interesting to note: kisses can be 뽀뽀 or 뽀뽀뽀, but never really just one 뽀.
Also interesting: I learned a new term of endearment, 귀염둥이 (gui-yum-doong-ee) which I translated as cutie (also sweetheart or baby). I would have like to translate it as "cutie butt" since the 둥이 (doong-ee) reminds me of 엉덩이 (uhng-duhng-ee) which means buttocks (teehee!), but I'll try to remain grown-up here. (gui-yuh-wuh!) means CUTE!
Enjoy!
Lyrics in Korean

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Tooth Brushing - Chee-kah 치카
I love it that doing a search for tooth brushing yielded 13 different songs, stories or games. I also love it that the Korean sound effect for brushing your teeth is CHEE-KAH. I'm so glad that Yahoo!Korean Kids values good dental hygiene as our family does. My favorite tooth-brushing song is Kuku and Yayas.
Yahoo!Korean Kids - Kuku and Yaya's story - Brushing teeth:
Summary of the story: Kuku doesn't want to brush his teeth even after his mom tells him brush after eating. When he goes to play at Yaya's house, Yaya is disgusted at his icky mouth and refuses to play with him. Mr. Sun advises him to sing the chee-kah song and all is happy when he goes home to brush his teeth.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Head, Shoulders, Knees and FEET -
W.O.W. bonus! 2 songs on one Sunday! To round out the body theme, I'm posting a song you probably already know. The Korean version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes is pretty much the same except that the Korean version uses FEET instead of TOES. And at the end of the song, the Korean version sings, "EAR, NOSE, EAR/MOUTH" depending on the version.

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Closed Fist
Recently, I asked my mom to sing me a kids Korean song, and she started singing this song. She was so cute making up the handmotions as she went along. The song is simple with simple motions: fist, open, clap, on your head!
Here's the Yahoo! Kids Korea version:
Cute video of mom singing the song to her son who's dancing away. I love at the end when dad says "jahl-hehs-uh-yo!" (good job!) little man motions, "raise the roof!" So cute!
This video shows Korean transformer type robots doing the handmotions:
And for an overload of CUTE, here's a whole pre-school class of kids doing the handmotions very poorly, but so cutely:
Words in Korean:

Korean Kids Song: When the Sun Rises
It's not Sunday, but I had to post this song early because I have been catching Husband whistling or humming this song. I must be successfully indoctrinating him with Korean music playing it a lot around the house for him to memorize the tune of it. Now he can learn the words!!
I think this song helps learn a lot of vocab for the daily chores...brushing teeth, washing face, putting on clothes, eating, etc. The handmotions are pretty engaging too.
Cute toddler singing and doing the motions. The song gets a bit to high for her, but finishes it off with a flourish!
Classroom of pre-school kids. (Oh, the little stinker on the right looks so uninterested)
Younger twins learning the motions to the song in this video.
Oh, I can't help myself! Another classroom of cuties:

Korean Kids Song Sunday: Where are your eyes?
So, based on recent news, I think we're going to be in this for the long haul. I'm trying to prepare myself: the wait will be long. Maybe the wait won't be so long for the referral, but I believe we will be stuck for a loooooooooong while waiting for the Korean government to allow us to bring our child home. My inclination is to be anxious, whine, cry out, "why?!?" and throw myself a pity party, but perhaps maybe I can attempt to be patient, productive and lean on the Lord and not on my own understanding during this process.
So, from now on, every Sunday will be Korean Kids Song Sunday and I'll post a new song.
In continuing the body parts theme from the Eyes Eyes Eyes song, this song seem like a fun one to sing with little ones as they learn the names to the body parts. It's also repetitive and easy to learn. Summary: Where are your eyes? Right here! Where is your nose? Right here!
The song is the 2nd in this youtube video - the little girl in the middle is so cute! (The third song is the Eyes Eyes Eyes song I posted, and did you recognize the last song?)

Where are mom's ears? Right there!
Where are mom's hands? Right there!
Where is mom's mouth? Right there!
Alternatives:
-Sing with different body parts
-Ask where are mom's, dad's, brothers, sisters, willing dog - eyes ears nose, etc.
-Sing with other items and things around the house or with shapes and colors, etc.

What are the songs that you like singing with your kids?
Besides yahoo! korea kids and youtube, what other online resources do you find fun stuff for kids? (not just Korean)
Right here!

Korean bookstore finds: Korean sound and singing books
This weekend boasted a girlfriend getaway with my Korean college friends which included a trip to a Korean bath house, a Korean hair salon, a Korean restaurant, a korean food court, and of course a Korean bookstore.
The kids book section is very enticing at The Korean Book Center at the Koreatown Plaza in LA. It was hard choosing just one book. Lemme show you what else I would have bought. These goodies combine 2 of my loves: books and children's music. I love that there's music attached to a BOOK and not to a screen. I feel like kids these days (including myself) spend way too much time in front of the TV or computer screen. So I want to maximize any opportunities for education and entertainment that doesn't come from a screen.
1) This book by Samsung Books features the lyrics to a few favorite kid songs like the 3 bears, eensy weensy spider, and 10 little indians and when you press the corresponding button, it plays the song. It uses AAA batteries so it could provide hours and hours of entertainment.
2) This alphabet book by Edu JoyUp was considered one of his bestsellers by the bookstore owner?manager? The soundbox had buttons for each letter of the alphabet, the numbers, a few bonus words and a song about cotton candy. My friend snagged this one for her twin girls - sticker price was $35. It's also sold at Little Seouls for $29.99, but my friend still won since she didn't have to pay for shipping. I bet it will be a well-loved book in her home.
4) The last book I don't have an image to show you, but it was called Go-Mah-Wuh and had about 6 buttons in the soundbox that corresponded to different "polite" words like go-mah-wuh (thank you), mi-yan-heh (sorry), ahn-young (hi) and jahl-ga-rah (see ya later!). It was shrink wrapped so I couldn't see inside the book. But this one's also a keeper.
So, you're probably wondering where you would find these books if you didn't live near a Korean bookstore. I'm wondering also. Amazon has a great selection of Korean-English books, Hanbooks has a lot of great Childrens' Books (Newberry and Caledcott awards; in Korean), and I mentioned Little Seouls above, but their selection is limited. Of course there are Korean online sites in Korean, but navigating those sites with my limited Korean would be difficult. So, I'm still on the look-out. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated!

Happy Father's Day - Daddy! Take Heart!
Last year's Father's Day carried a lot of sadness as Husband faced his first father-less Father's Day and the fact that he was still not yet a father was even more evident. This year, that sadness of losing Dad Yap was still remembered, yet the day carried a hopefulness that maybe this will be our last child-less Father's Day.
To end the day on a really happy note, here's a song for Dad's, especially for my super hard-working Husband whom I love:
Appah Heem Neh Seh Yo translates as "Daddy! Be Strong! (Take heart!)" In summary: Daddy comes home from work looking a bit dejected, tired and worried. So, we just wanna say, "Daddy! Be Strong! We're with you!"

Translation:
Ding-dong-deng, on hearing the door bell, I quickly ran to open it
it was my dad was standing at the door waiting
I was so happy to see you, I yelled out, "Daddy!"
But, today your face looks sad
Did something happen at work? Are you worried about something?
What's troubling you today?
Daddy, be strong! Arent' we all here for you?
Daddy, be strong! We're here for you
Daddy, we love you!
